Advanced Restorative Dentistry

Advanced Restorative dentistry is the diagnosis and treatment of severely decayed, missing, weakened or infected and damaged teeth.

Advanced restorative dentistry focuses on three main therapeutic areas - Root canals, Implant-supported Structures and Crown/Bridgework.

Root Canals

Bacteria in the mouth can cause the pulp, (the core of a tooth - filled with blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue) of a tooth, to become infected.

The result of this infection can be swelling, pressure and/or tooth pain caused by the bacteria attacking the nerves in the tooth. If not treated correctly this could result in losing the tooth altogether.

If not treated correctly this could result in losing the tooth altogether. Dr Pretorius will look to remove the nerve/pulp of the tooth to treat the infection, prevent further discomfort and save the structure of the tooth.

Crowns

Patients with broken, heavily worn away, discoloured or severely decayed teeth could be suitable patients for Crowns.

This treatment goes hand-in-hand with a tooth that has undergone a root canal, but the structure of the tooth still remains compromised.

Dr Pretorius will build up a Crown, using either thin porcelain, metal or even a mixture of both of these materials.

Crowns cover the tooth structure and act as a barrier to protect the compromised tooth. The advantage of a crown is increased tooth strength and stability and a crown also improves the aesthetics of the crowned tooth.

 Bridges

Used to close off gaps in your smile, a bridge offers the patient the opportunity to restore their smile with a false tooth/teeth (called Pontics).

Bridges “bridge” the gap with a false tooth held in place by abutment teeth (often created by a crown) that will hold the bridge in place. There are 4 main types of bridge options available to patients:

  • Traditional

  • Cantilever

  • Maryland

  • Implant-supported

As each patient’s mouth and teeth are different, Dr Pretorius will partner with the patient in developing a treatment plan suited uniquely to the patient, this plan will take into account the location of the patients missing teeth, the number of gaps and existing structural challenges.

Implant-Supported Structures

These structures are a modern approach to restoring missing teeth, offering a patient a natural, secure and almost seamless replacement for these oral structures. Depending on the existing structure of the patient's mouth, gums and remaining teeth, Dr Pretorius will work with the patient to determine a suitable treatment plan, also taking into consideration the patient's budget.

The use of Implant-supported Crowns, Bridges and Dentures go a long way in creating a natural-looking smile because these dental prosthetics stay in place without the use of adhesives. The prosthetic fuses to a patient's mouth structured and will function like natural teeth allowing the patient to feel more confident when eating, speaking or smiling.
